How to use your Wegovy pen: step-by-step guide
A complete walkthrough for injecting Wegovy safely, including dose schedules, injection sites, and what to do if you miss a dose. This guide covers everything you need to know as a new or existing patient.
Before you start
Before using your Wegovy pen for the first time, make sure you've read the patient information leaflet included in your packaging. Your pen comes pre-filled and pre-set with your prescribed dose — there's no need to measure anything yourself.
Check the following before each injection:
- The medication hasn't expired (check the date on the pen)
- The liquid is clear and colourless — do not use if cloudy or discoloured
- The pen hasn't been frozen or left in direct sunlight
- You have a fresh needle tip attached
Choosing an injection site
Wegovy is injected subcutaneously (under the skin). You can inject into three areas:
- Abdomen — at least 5cm from your belly button
- Upper thigh — front of the thigh
- Upper arm — outer area (may need someone to help)
Rotate your injection site each week to reduce the chance of skin irritation. Avoid injecting into areas that are bruised, tender, or scarred.

Step-by-step injection guide
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Attach a new needle — push and twist until secure. Remove both needle caps.
- Check the flow — for first use, point the needle up and press the dose button until a drop appears at the tip.
- Select your dose — turn the dose selector until it shows your prescribed dose.
- Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab and let it dry.
- Insert the needle — pinch the skin and insert at a 90-degree angle.
- Press the dose button — hold it down and count slowly to 6 before removing.
- Remove and dispose — pull the needle out straight and place the cap on. Dispose in a sharps bin.
Your dose schedule
Wegovy follows a gradual dose escalation to help reduce side effects. Here's the standard schedule:

What if I miss a dose?
If you miss your scheduled injection day:
- Within 5 days — take the dose as soon as you remember, then continue on your usual day
- More than 5 days late — skip the missed dose and take the next one on your scheduled day
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you miss several doses in a row, contact our clinical team for advice on whether to restart your dose escalation.
Storing your pen
- Store unused pens in the fridge (2°C – 8°C)
- After first use, keep at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 28 days
- Always keep the pen cap on when not in use to protect from light
- Never freeze your pen — if it has been frozen, do not use it
